Essential Oils have always been a part of my life. Ever since I was a little girl growing up in China I took an interest on learning what they were and their uses. My grandmother played a big part teaching me a lot of what I know and it definitely influenced the person I am now and how I take care of myself and my family. Don’t get me wrong; western medicine can be great and you should always see a doctor if you feel something is going on. But there are other techniques that can influence the way your body and mind responds. Essential oils can definitely have an impact on your mood. As a plus you can use it to make you and your house smell amazing and induce a calm, quiet mood.

If you’re starting on aromatherapy don’t go and rush to buy a million different oil scents. Stick with the basics and see how you feel, which ones are the best essential oil scents for you and your family. A tiny vial lasts for a long time as you’ll only be using a couple of drops per use.

Let’s face it: there is a very good feeling about opening your door house after a hard day out and feel a scent that you like and that makes you feel good inside and take one deep breath. In my opinion, in order to choose the best essential oil scents, you need to think in two things: what you want to obtain and your personal taste. And don’t forget: pregnant ladies may be quite sensitive to smells and it can cause nauseas. Your body is your temple and you need to pay attention to what it says to you in all the different stages of life!

So, what are the best essential oils to have at home? As I said before, trust your nose but I will tell you some of the basics and my personal favorites. So here is my top 5, in no particular order.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender – pretty much everyone knows about Lavender and its amazing properties. It is one of the best scented essential oils for personal use and for your house. It smells good and is a very effective stress-relieving oil. It also helps with headaches, colds and flu. One of my favorite uses is spraying over bed linen before bed time. It just soothes you and helps you getting a good night sleep.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea tree – This is a must-have. It boosts the immune system and helps fight infections. Its healing properties are outstanding. Just avoid using it internally or around the eyes and nose. It was my grandmother’s favourite. She used it everywhere!

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint – Used in chewing gum because of it's freshness but it is also an excellent oil to freshen up your home. It can be used to stop nausea and to increase energy and mental awareness. It enhances inner peace and relaxes the mind.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus – Great for respiratory issues and you can use it in any homemade cleaning recipe. If you have pets, to keep fleas away, mix 3-4 drops into your pet’s shampoo.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon – With numerous therapeutic qualities lemon aids in digestion, is a natural immunity booster, helps your concentration levels and eases symptoms of arthritis.

These are just 5 of the best smelling oils for home. You can use them alone or combine them in dozens different ways. You can mix and match and create blends. Most of the time, essential oils are not used pure. They are blended into a carrier oil (base oil). This allows them to last longer and to be easier to diffuse. Usually, you can use this ratio: 3 drops of essential oil into 5ml of base oil. If you’re using it with children, pregnant women or people with very sensitive skin you should blend 1 drop into 5ml of carrier oil. You will still have the best smelling essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities, even diluted. As you see, there is no need to go crazy or spend a lot of money to get the benefits of aromatherapy. Essential oils smell great and clean your house as well.

Using essential oils to make your own scent allows you to save a lot of money, have your own individual fragrance and protect your health from toxics that go with most of the perfumes you can find. Also, I don’t know if it happens to you but using a regular perfume – or even just entering a department store – gives me headaches. So, a lot of benefits can come from using the best essential oil scents.

Fragrances can be divided in categories, each one of them with a correspondent character and emotion. Find your individual preferences and how you want to influence your mood – and others around you. Make a simple list with odors and tick the ones you like. Usually they can be divided in 4 big groups:

  1. Natural animal essences, such as musk or civet. Said to activate desire, most primitive emotions.
  2. Spicy, woody essences such as cinnamon or cedar. They have a refreshing, activating quality.
  3. Herbal fragrances (pine, eucalyptus). Gives you a feeling of power and confidence.
  4. Finally we have the floral family. They need to be balanced in order to give you a sense of calm and tranquility.

Once you've chosen your favorite fragrance family get some essential oils and start experimenting! Place a drop of the scent on your hand or wrist, mix in an oil blender and allow the odors to mingle together for a while. Then is time for the sniff test. Is it right for you?
