What are essential oils?
According to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, essential oils are the naturally occurring, volatile oils that are extracted from plants through distillation or cold pressing. These aromatic compounds are the spirit and life force of the plant, taken from the bark, stem, seeds, roots, or flowers. They are the very essence of the plant and all have specific, distinct aromas. Their constantly changing chemical compositions provide wonderful adaptive benefits for plants, but they can also do amazing things for humans in many aspects of our lives.
What are the benefits of essential oils?
Essential oils are fantastic healing agents for our minds and bodies. Essential oils can treat depression and anxiety, help us sleep, increase happiness levels, make us feel more alert and concentrated, alleviate PMS, and treat headaches. The antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties of many essential oils can treat infection, freshen air, alleviate acne and eczema, stop dandruff, function as a natural deodorant or toothpaste, and heal scars and burns. They are multifaceted and work wonders!
How can you use essential oils?
Here are some examples of the most common ways essential oils are used, the problems they can solve, and ways they can be implemented into daily life:
Diffusing essential oils is one of the most common ways to reap the natural benefits of essential oils. David Wolfe, alternative medicine promoter, explains that diffusion is shooting essential oil molecules into a room to disburse them throughout the air. The molecules are inhaled, absorbed into nerves, and brought directly to the brain. Depending on which oils you use, this is a quick and easy way to let the oils calm your nerves, awaken your senses, and cleanse your mind and body.
Diffusers can be purchased that transform the molecules into vapor or you can simply hold the bottle of essential oils to your nose and deeply inhale. This method not only provides mind and body benefits, but the antibacterial properties of many oils used for diffusing cleanse the air you are breathing and leave a room smelling great!
Essential oils have been used as perfume for centuries. They smell fantastic, cover up body odor, promote overall wellness, and are a great non-toxic, all-natural alternative to store-bought perfumes and colognes. Store-bought perfumes are often unregulated and laden with chemicals that can cause headaches and allergic reactions, while using essential oils as perfume leave you smelling fantastic and can actually prevent headaches and alleviate allergic reactions.
Most mainstream perfumes contain essential oils anyway, so it is healthier and more cost-effective to go straight to the source and use essential oils as perfumes directly. It is perfectly safe to apply essential oils on their own as perfume, but you can also dilute them with a carrier oil (my favorite is coconut oil) if you prefer.
Essential oils have done incredible things for my skin thanks to their antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal, and cytophylactic properties. They can fight acne, alleviate eczema, reduce wrinkles, reverse aging skin, tighten pores, creating glowing, radiant skin, soothe burns and cuts, even out pigmentation, reduce the appearance of scars and cellulite, lift and tighten facial skin, balance skin’s natural oil production, and bring overall rejuvenation to dull, tired skin. Many store-bought skin creams and cleansers contain chemicals that can irritate skin further.
By incorporating essential oils into your skin care regime, you can tackle skin problems from the inside out, which leads to long-term, holistic treatment for your skin woes. Many oils can be diluted with a carrier oil and rubbed into problem areas. Dipping a cotton swab directly into an essential oil like Tea Tree is great for acne spot treatment. I love putting a few drops in my natural moisturizers for an extra boost or putting a few drops in boiling water and steaming my face for a DIY mini-facial!
Essential oils do wonderful things for hair and scalp care by stimulating follicles, balancing oil production, reducing irritation and itchiness, preventing hair growth, creating scalp circulation, toning down frizz, and strengthening hair. Essential oils delve deep into hair follicles, reaching much farther than mainstream shampoos and conditioners are capable of reaching. I also love them for making my hair smell fantastic!
Adding a few drops to your natural shampoo or conditioner might just be the hair solution you’ve been looking for! For scalp remedies, Web MD notes the importance of diluting your essential oils with a carrier oil since the scalp is so sensitive. It is recommended to heat the mixture, massage it onto the scalp vigorously, cover head with a shower cap, and let sit for 30 minutes or so before rinsing out. There’s nothing worse than having a busy day ahead of you and feeling run down from a nagging headache! Instead of reaching for a bottle of pills, try a natural remedy by using essential oils. I have never had a headache that my essential oil regime couldn’t alleviate - even the worst tension headaches! Dr. Axe, wellness physician, notes that essential oils are so effective in curing headaches because they treat what triggered the headache in the first place (generally stress), aid circulation, and soothe tension.
Next time you have a headache, put a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil on your fingers and massage into your temples, scalp, forehead, and the back of your neck. Read our article about what essential oils to use against headaches.
Almost everyone I know has experienced problems with sleeping at some point in their lives! When the pressures of work and life in general become overwhelming, the stress and anxiety they cause can lead to lack of sleep. When you’re not fully rested, this often leads to MORE stress and anxiety! It’s a vicious cycle. Luckily, essential oils can easily remedy stress and anxiety, allowing you to have a better night of sleep! Lavender and chamomile have relaxing, comforting scents which signal to your brain that it is time to calm down and rest.
Natural Living Ideas notes that they even stimulate the glands that naturally release melatonin. Diffuse them in your bedroom, dilute them to make a pillow spray, rub them on your temples, or put a few drops in your nightly bath to ease stress, alleviate anxiety, and enjoy a fantastic night of sleep! How to choose the best essential oil brands?
So, we are up to date on all of the fabulous ways that essential oils can benefit your health, well-being, beauty, and overall life quality. Now it is important to understand which essential oils to buy to incorporate into your daily life. Not all brands are the same and not all companies produce essential oils the way they should. Choosing the best essential oils can be tricky, but I’ve made it simple for you with these rules of thumb:
- Purity: The best essential oils are 100% pure, authentic, genuine, unadulterated, undiluted, and organic with no additives or fillers. Essential oils should be untouched after the point of distillation.
- Labeled: Only buy essential oils that have the country source and latin name of the plant clearly visible on the label and that come in a dark bottle rather than clear glass.
- Thin Oil: Many essential oil companies thin down their products with vegetable oils. To avoid this, pour a bit on some paper towel - if it turns oily or greasy, it isn’t pure.
- Fragrance & Perfume: Oils that are fragranced or perfumed are NOT pure essential oils.
- Price: In general, higher quality essential oils have a higher price tag. The trick is finding a balance of the highest quality oils for the lowest prices.
- Customer Service: Only buy essential oils from companies that provide good service and have good reputations. Jade Shutes, herbalist, explains that you should only buy essential oils from companies that have ethical reputations, have been in business for a long time, have relationships with their distillers, and are owned by essential oil specialists or aromatherapy practitioners.
